Our history
Gaintza has a long and proud history, going back four generations of the Lazkano family, in the elaboration, production and sale of Txakoli.
Since
1923
Making our passion our trade
Since the creation of the Gaintza winery in 1923, until the latest expansion in 2012, Gaintza has always been an innovative, pioneering company in constant transformation.
We are passionate about our traditions and we strive to adapt them to the 21st century, combining modern technology with more traditional production.
Our great-grandfather José Antonio was already making txakoli from our vineyards in the Golindo farmhouse, for family consumption and sale in neighbouring villages. Since then, these vineyards have been worked and pampered by four generations, and the result can be seen in every bottle.
VALUES AND PHILOSOPHY
At Gaintza, we have a deep love and respect for our land.
Our desire is to produce wines of optimum phenolic ripeness with citrus flavours and moderate alcohol levels, which is a reflection of the site and the vintage.
That is why our philosophy is to be committed to sustainable agriculture, being respectful of our heritage. We do not intend to farm in any particular way beyond what we believe is sustainable and optimal for our vineyard.
This last generation has suffered the effects of the excessive use of phytosanitary products when working in the fields, and at the same time, we are conscious of the environment. That is why from the field to the bottle, we follow this philosophy:".
Integrated viticulture
Sustainable agriculture. Guaranteed minimum use of phytosanitary products.
Recycled boxes
Reduction of carbon footprint. Use of recycled material.
Mineral paper
We do not cut down any trees to make our labels.
Absolute Green Line
Bio-based PE capsule. Water-based inks and no chemical adhesives.
Integral production
25 hectares of own vineyards. Family-owned production and winemaking.
100 years
FAMILY
The vineyards and the winery are looked after by our small, family-run team.
The planting of new vines, the care of the vines, their harvest and subsequent vinification, as well as their commercialisation is carried out by us, the family.
Gaintza has been growing generation after generation and we have evolved due to the incorporation of qualified staff, achieving a special bond between all of us through the txakoli that we make together year after year.

Vineyards
Our 25 hectares of vineyards are protected by Mount Garate and facing the Cantabrian Sea, an area that survived the phylloxera epidemic of the 18th century.
Thanks to our our family legacy,we have old vineyards planted on tall vines next to the new plantations in long trellised rows, among which we find the Hondarribi Zuri. Although it is the grape variety that prevails over the others, it is also accompanied by the grape varieties permitted by the Getariako Txakolina D.O.; Hondarribi Beltz and Chardonnay, among others.
All the plots are harvested by hand with a careful selection at their optimum moment of ripeness.
11°C
Terroir
The climate, the geological and biological characteristics of the soil, as well as the orientation of the vineyards, determine to a large extent the characteristics of a wine-growing territory, in our case, the terroir of the txakolí is located in a special territory, the Basque Coast.
The high humidity, the clayey soil and the proximity to the sea are three of the characteristics that mark the territory. Factors that determine, for example, an annual oscillation of a maximum of 11ºC. thanks to the Cantabrian Sea.
In addition, the vineyards are trained in a trellis and trellis system, allowing us to obtain grapes of excellent quality to obtain fresh txakolis with their own identity.
